Monday Movie Review: Shazam! Fury of The Gods

SYNOPSIS (off google): Bestowed with the powers of the gods, Billy Batson and his fellow foster kids are still learning how to juggle teenage life with their adult superhero alter egos. When a vengeful trio of ancient gods arrives on Earth in search of the magic stolen from them long ago, Shazam and his allies get thrust into a battle for their superpowers, their lives, and the fate of the world.

I recently had a chance to watch one of the latest DC movie releases, the second installment in the Shazam! Films. First off, I love Zachary Levi. Ever since Chuck, he's been one of my favorite actors to watch, and it doesn't hurt that he has a good singing voice, too (Thank you, Tangled). In this movie, he's the Shazam, the older hero version of Billy Batson. It starts off with the staff that gave him and his family their powers being stolen from a museum, where it ended up after Billy broke it in half in the first movie. Unbeknownst to him and his siblings, this also broke a barrier, trapping the three daughters of Atlas, the Gods mentioned in the title. Problems ensue as the daughters try to find the Seed of the Tree of Life to restore their realm. It's not done in the nicest of manners, as they use the staff to remove a few of the siblings' powers, and one of the daughters uses her powers of chaos to kill Batman! Okay, it was just the voice of Batman from Batman: The Brave and The Bold, Diedrich Bader. It was still very upsetting as he had and was also attempting to save Freddy from a bad situation as he was a teacher at the school. This is before the daughters kidnap Freddy and trap the city of Philadelphia in a dome. Does that explain all the other shows that have domes mysteriously covering the cities? A God did it?

This movie was delightful to watch. The jokes were great. Also, because I'm a sucker for romance, I enjoyed the storyline between Freddy and Ana, a daughter of Atlas. It was funny as Ana, being a God, was over 6000 years old, which made Freddy's parents a little uncomfortable, but then Billy has a crush on Wonder Woman, who first shows up in a dream where her face is replaced with the Wizard's face to give Billy a warning about the daughters of Atlas and again at the end of the movie where she helps restore the dying tree in Ana's realm. Leaving their parents wondering why their sons like much older women? It was a funny gag. Another little tidbit I found funny: not that I'm looking forward to Snow White that's coming out next year, due to all the negative marketing, but Ana was played by Rachel Zegler, who is Snow White and, of course, Wonder Woman is Gal Gadot who will be playing the Evil Queen. I just thought it was funny that two DC actors were now going to be two Disney actors.

I would give this movie 4.5 O's! I would recommend that you watch this. It has an end credit, so watch out for that. It continues the end credit from the first movie. I'm hoping there's going to be a third installment to get the story of the talking worm. I'm very interested in that one, especially if they bring Mark Strong back.

Go watch Shazam!
